Local guy goes for “Best Dressed” title
May 29, 2008
Among the stylish gents listed in Esquire Magazine’s Best Dressed Real Man Contest is fashionable local Griffin VanMeter.
Top-ranked profiles can be viewed and voted upon at http://esquirebdrm.com, including photos of the 27-year-old Lexington native wearing a fitted Thom Browne jacket at Keeneland (photo at left by Michael Wright), sporting of-the-moment skinny jeans and carrying a Takumi Shimamura wooden briefcase. The top five winners will be announced in August.
VanMeter’s pictures are as witty as they are stylish, and his online bio is a fun read too, (Question: Take 10 words to define your personal style. Answer: “Audaciously necessary.”)
And he is passionate about local issues as well. Asked about Creative Lexington, a group he helped organize to oppose the demolition of a historic downtown block, VanMeter gave it his own unique spin.
“I am an urban ninja,” he replied in an e-mail. “Please don’t list me as anything but this.”
‘Sex and the City’ style
Sex and the City: The Movie opens Friday, and one of the biggest draws is sure to be the fashions. The HBO series, after all, spawned many a style trend — flower pins as big as your head, Manolo Blahnik shoes and more.
Designers are more than willing to help possible customers by showcasing merchandise from the film.
Wondering where to find Carrie’s Oscar de la Renta dress from the movie or Miranda’s metallic Alexander McQueen handbag? Visit SeenOn.com and shop for character-specific styles or items from movie scenes and the site will take you to online boutiques so you can buy the piece.
In addition to SATC, the site also features fashions from other movies and TV shows, including Ugly Betty and The Hills.

While I grew up in small-town Kentucky I’ve always been fascinated with the cosmopolitan world of high fashion. On the other hand, I love a bargain and the thrill of shopping for just the right piece.
I have a degree in English from the University of Kentucky, and since 2002 I’ve written a column for the Lexington Herald-Leader about shopping, beauty and fashion. During that time I’ve interviewed everyone from designers to boutique owners about trends and style. And I’m still forever searching for the next big sale.
